Nokia announces XpressMusic 5310 and 5610

Nokia has added two models to its music oriented XpressMusic series today. The 5310 candybar clocks in at just 9.9mm thick, offers 18 hours of music playback — through the 3.5mm jack if you’re so inclined — a microSD slot supporting capacities up to 4GB, dedicated music controls, and a QVGA display for €225 (about $307) when it ships in the fourth quarter. Next up, the 5610 rocks a slider form factor and features a nifty slide navigation bar underneath the display, metallic and high-gloss finishes, a 2.2 inch QVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, and close to a full day of music playback for a tad more than its sibling, €300 (about $410), with a drop date also in Q4.

Creative’s 16GB Zen gets reviewed

Author:  //  Category: Uncategorized

Creative’s Zen — which comes with 16GB of built-in storage as well as an SD slot for expansion — may not be a real iPod challenger in the eyes of Apple fanboys and those sold out to the click wheel interface, but for those with vast DivX collections and no real allegiance to another brand name, this new PMP looks to be a winner. In a recent review, the player’s support for a variety of formats, decent design, and impressive amount of flash storage were all hailed as major pluses, but the 2.5-inch display isn’t exactly large enough for (comfortable) extended movie viewing. Overall, Creative’s 16GB Zen managed to garner quite a bit of praise from the folks at Popular Mechanics, but they pretty much mirrored our own sentiments by concluding that “you’d be an absolute idiot to buy the Zen before Apple’s September 5th announcement.”

Author:  //  Category: Uncategorized

There it is again, the Creative Zen. Yeah, not Zen something, just Zen. Yep, it’s the same device with a 2.5-inch flash player with up to 16GB memory and an SD slot (as well as sick codec support, including MP3, WMA, PlaysForSure, AAC, Audible, WMV, DivX, Xvid, etc.), 5 hours of movie playback, FM radio, and PIM features. You saw it all earlier today, but now it’s official, so move on with yourself.

[Thanks, Steve]

UniquePhones releases iPhone unlock video in attempt to prove hack

Author:  //  Category: Uncategorized

Filed under:

There’s never any substitute for independent verification, but we can understand why the UniquePhones crew wanted to whip up a video depicting the SIM unlock of an iPhone using their still-unreleased solution. With almost a half million signed up to be notified of the hack’s release, to say they’re getting harshed on by the tech community for the MIA unlock software is kind of an understatement. Despite the five points we’re giving their crew for the effort, this is the part where the conspiracy theorists in the house are sure to chime in about the impossibility of an honest to goodness iPhone SIM unlock video produced by a company that specializes in unlocking phones. Well, fret not, we’re still waiting eagerly to put the spurs to the hack ourselves, and we’ll let you know in short order as soon as (or if ever) we snag it. Oh, video after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Samsung announces three new Q1 Ultra models

Author:  //  Category: Uncategorized

While they aren’t updates on the order of the refresh to the original Q1, Samsung has apparently decided that it was time to give the Q1 Ultra a bit more company, with it today announcing not one, but three new models. On the low end of the lot, the Q1U-ELXP gets a 600MHz A100 Ultra Mobile processor and a 40GB hard drive with a list price of $999. Taking things up a notch, the $1149 Q1U-XP boasts a 800MHz A110 processor and an 80GB hard drive, while the $1649 Q1U-SSDXP unit packs the same processor and a speedier but pricier 32GB NAND flash drive. From the looks of it, all the other specs remain the same as the standard Q1 Ultra, with Windows XP Tablet Edition serving as the OS. From the sound of it, all three should be available from the all usual sources immediately.

Olympus launches the E-3 DSLR?

Author:  //  Category: Uncategorized

Filed under:

Remember the unnamed Olympus DSLR of with multiple monickers? We’ve seen it as the E-P1 and P-1, but now, after what seems like countless months brand-free glass-encased trade show appearances it looks like Olympus has officially titled launched it’s E-1 DSLR successor, the E-3. We don’t yet know much about it, but we understand it will have a live view LCD, work on the 3/4ths mount standard, and be available at least somewhere in November. (That in addition to the other stuff we heard, like it having a 10 megapixel sensor, 11 point autofocus, etc.) We’ll update with information as it continues to trickle out.

GameTech set to release Nintendo DS save game transfer system

Author:  //  Category: Uncategorized

Filed under:

Those looking to be a little more selective in the Nintendo DS-related media they transfer to and from their PC will soon have a new option from GameTech, which is set to release the above hardware/software combo in Japan on August 31st. While there unfortunately doesn’t appear to be much more info than what you see on the box, the system seems to be straightforward enough, consisting a USB stick-sized device that’ll accommodate your DS cart and some software (Windows only) that’ll help you backup and manage your save game files. Of course, we’re sure there’s plenty of folks that’ll find more uses for the thing than just save games, although it doesn’t seem like GameTech’s willing to help you in that department.

HTC Shift, others to see release at Dubai’s GITEX show

Author:  //  Category: Uncategorized

With interest in the Shift — HTC’s foray into the wacky UMPC market — coming to a rolling boil, we’re glad to hear the company has finally shored up firm plans to get the sucker released. Vishnu Vardhan, HTC’s exec for the Middle East and North Africa, says that the Shift will see an official release at Dubai’s GITEX Technology Week starting September 8. That’s not all, though; Vardhan says that four “brand new products” will see the light of day for the first time at GITEX, too, and if we had to lay money on it, we’d guess they’re all Windows Mobile handsets. We’d previously heard that the Touch-like Nike might get called out in September, but the other three are anyone’s guess.
