Details are unsurprisingly light on this one, but DigiTimes has it that NVIDIA is gearing up to launch its next-generation GPU just after the Lunar New Year in February 2008. Reportedly, “sources at graphics card makers” have revealed that the GeForce 9 series will include the D9E — a “high-end product that adopts 65-nanometer manufacturing,” supports DirectX 10.1 and Shader Model 4.1 — and the mid-range D9P, which will supposedly adopt 55-nanometer processing. Apparently, the former will be the first product in the new family, while the latter won’t see light until June, but of course, we’d take every ounce of this with a healthy serving of salt for the time being.

It’s not like ThinkPads have been immune to the notorious overheating battery issue, but a fiery incident in Ohio may not be IBM’s fault. In a somewhat bizarre tale, it’s reported that an Ohioan purchased a replacement battery from Shentech for his ThinkPad, only to later have it overheat, catch on fire and damage his machine. After discovering that the faulty cell was actually a counterfeit, IBM took the liberty of ordering a dozen batteries from the Flushing, New York-based company, and it soon discovered that all twelve received were indeed fakes. As you can probably guess, IBM has filed suit against the outfit and has asked the court to require Shentech to hand over all of its batteries for destruction, profits it made from selling the fakes and a million dollars “per counterfeit mark per type of item sold.” That’ll teach ‘em to mess with Big Blue.

In a recent chat with clients, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster did a little name dropping regarding Google’s Open Handset Alliance, casually mentioning in passing that Verizon “is a member.” Hold up there, chief; last time we checked, that isn’t the case. Among US national carriers, only T-Mobile and Sprint have publicly thrown their hats into the Android ring, so we’re not sure whether Mr. Munster knows something we don’t (which is entirely possible) or whether he’s just a little confused. For what it’s worth, we can understand why he’d be confused in light of Verizon’s recent commitment to open its airwaves to all comers — the initiative appears to share much of the same spirit as the OHA’s charter, after all — but by the same token, Google’s intention to snap up 700MHz bandwidth would seemingly pit the two juggernauts against one another. We’ll have to wait and see whether Big Red’s name magically appears on the Alliance’s member list, but if it does, the pressure’s gonna get pretty high on AT&T to cave, eh?

If so, look no further than Radius’ new set, which plug right into the dock in order to extract all the juice they need to block out extraneous clamor. The radStrap canalphones are expected to ship in black, green and silver, and feature a neck strap, on / off switch for the noise-cancellation, an aluminum housing and frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz. Check ‘em out next month for ¥8,980 ($82), but don’t get your hopes up for a bonafide US release.

We’ve already seen the idea of data-to-voice translation passed around, but NEC’s latest software is far beyond the drawing board. Reportedly, the firm has developed a system that can understand around 50,000 Japanese words and translate them to English text on the mobile’s display in just a second or two. The software was made compact enough to “operate on a small microchip mounted in a cellphone,” and was designed especially to help users convert common travel phrases. Notably, it would be technically possible to make the English translation vocal, but according to NEC spokesman Mitsumasa Fukumoto, the firm isn’t looking into that possibility at the moment. No word on when we’d see this technology hit the masses, nor if any other language combinations were in the works, but this would certainly make touring English-speaking locales a lot less strenuous for Japanese speakers.

Speed boost or no, all of you clamoring for some hot Vista SP1 action will be able to get a beta-style fix in December, according to ZDNet. Apparently “selected testers” will get a release candidate in the first week of the month, with general availability to come the week after. ZDNet says the current SP1 build being tested is 17051, but it’s not clear whether that’s the version to be released or not. Like all things SP1, looks like we’ll just have to wait and see.

While some past pronouncements of world-changing inventions haven’t exactly panned out as promised, this latest one will at least have a pretty large stage on which to prove itself, with none other than Al Gore and others paying £1,000 or more apiece in the audience. As you might expect, however, things are being kept as vague as possible ahead of the big unveiling, which is set to go down later today in London. One of the few apparently clued in in the matter, British Inventors’ Society founder Kane Kramer, would only go so far as to describe it as “a new science, a Super Material,” adding that, “It would be 80 per cent cheaper than any alternative means of production, and it will contribute in a major way to reducing climate change.” So, it’s “something,” but we’ll just have to wait and see if it delivers as advertised.
